However,\nthe remains of Illyrian forts on the hills and the traces of the <em>Limes<\/em> boundary wall in Mari\u0161\u0107ina Forest\nattest to the fact that this area has been inhabited since ancient times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The northern part, which is the largest\nin size, is called Halubje and is located at an altitude of 400 m. The name\ncomes from the word <em>halupa<\/em>, meaning shepherd&#8217;s\nhut, which reflects the local tradition of shepherding \u2013 the area&#8217;s main\nactivity until the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century. After the industrial boom and\nincreased need for milk in the neighbouring city of Rijeka, the inhabitants of Halubje\nturned from sheep to cow farming. Due to the scarcity of arable land and an unfavourable\nclimate for growing more demanding crops, each family cultivated small plots of\nland to provide enough food for themselves. They grew potatoes, beans, cabbages,\nturnips, carrots, peas, corn and vines. Men burned charcoal in the forests, and\nthe women carried it together with the milk to Rijeka and Opatija to sell it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The southern part of the Municipality of\nVi\u0161kovo (the area from Furi\u0107evo to Marini\u0107i) is called Gornja Smokvarija, the\nname of which is derived from the Croatian word for fig (<em>smokva<\/em>), revealing that this area, located at an altitude approximately\n100 m below Halubje, once had more favourable conditions for growing crops,\nespecially fruit. In addition, due to the proximity of Rijeka, its inhabitants could\nwork in the city&#8217;s factories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the Middle Ages until the mid-20<sup>th<\/sup>\ncentury, this area was part of the Kastav Commune, which was ruled by the feudal\nlords of the Devin, Walsee and Habsburg families. The administrative centre was\nthe town of Kastav. For hundreds of years, the relevant law was the Law of the\nTown of Kastav, which dates back to 1400 and is one of the oldest legal\ndocuments written in the Croatian language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development of this area is connected\nto the construction of the road towards Italy, Austria and other European\ncountries. Historical records from the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century mention that a\nroad which connected Rijeka and Ljubljana passed through what is now Vi\u0161kovo. Inns,\nforges and other facilities were opened along this road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historians believe that Vi\u0161kovo emerged in\nthe 18<sup>th<\/sup> century on a hill called Vi\u0161kov Breg, which was the original\nname of the settlement. After the construction of the small chapel of St.\nMatthew, the village was named Sveti Matej. This name was first recorded on an\nAustrian map from the period between 1763 and 1784. A church dedicated to the\nsame saint was erected on the location of the chapel in 1862 and consecrated in\n1865.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An article in <em>Nova Sloga<\/em> newspaper in 1892 depicts Sveti Matej in the following\nmanner: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Sveti Matej is a small\nbut lovely village built on a small hill, and is known as Vi\u0161kov Breg by the\nlocals. I do not wish to praise it, but it must be admitted that it is one of\nthe most beautiful villages in the Kastav area. It has nice spacious houses and\nthere is also the impressive Church of St. Matthew and a school building. The\nlatter is located on the most attractive spot in the village.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The newspaper also gives an account of\nVi\u0161kovo in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century during the reign of Maria Theresa:<em>In the middle of the village, there is a water\nwell with an imperial coat of arms on it. It was built by the Empress Maria\nTheresa so that the soldiers who passed through this area could have fresh\nwater. The well is nicely constructed, and its opening is made of wrought iron and\nit is equipped with a pulley to raise water. The well is located in a district\nwhich is, together with the school building, now part of the municipality.\nRight next to the village, there is an attractive spacious cemetery and the Church\nof St. Rochus.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are very few written records from the early period of the area of what is now the Municipality of Vi\u0161kovo.
