{"id":42990,"date":"2026-01-30T12:14:25","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T12:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/visitviskovo.krea.co.uk\/cakavska-rijec-i-glazba\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T16:12:42","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T16:12:42","slug":"cakavska-rijec-i-glazba","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/visitviskovo.hr\/en\/viskovo\/kulturna-bastina\/cakavska-rijec-i-glazba\/","title":{"rendered":"Language and music"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Municipality of Vi\u0161kovo is part of Liburnia, a region whose administrative centre until the mid-20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century was Kastav, which is why this area is known locally as Kastav\u0161tina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"language\"><strong>LANGUAGE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The local language is a Liburnian variety of the Chakavian dialect with a consistent Ekavian pronunciation of the Slavic sound \u2018yat\u2019 and with Ekavian noun endings. The special (softer) pronunciation of the \u2018\u0107\u2019 sound and the retention of the Old Slavic consonant clusters \u2018\u0161\u0107\u2019 and \u2018\u010dr\u2019 are also characteristic of this dialect. The sound \u2018l\u2019 is not vocalised, the sounds \u2018lj\u2019 and \u2018\u0111\u2019 have been replaced with \u2018j\u2019, the sound \u2018d\u017e\u2019 does not exist, and the sound \u2018nj\u2019 is pronounced as \u2018n\u2019j\u2019. Today, the vocabulary still includes certain old grammatical forms and words, and also a substantial number of Italian loan words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain specific and very old linguistic features have been best preserved in Mar\u010delji. For example, the pronunciation of \u2018u\u2019 instead of \u2018v\u2019 has almost disappeared, but some distinctive aspects such as the change from \u2018o\u2019 to \u2018u\u2019 at the beginning of certain words and the same endings for masculine and feminine words have been retained. This linguistic heritage is alive and fostered both orally and in written form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specifi\u010dne, vrlo stare jezi\u010dne osobine ostale su najdulje sa\u010duvane u mjestu Mar\u010delji. Izgovor&nbsp;<strong>u&nbsp;<\/strong>umjesto&nbsp;<strong>v<\/strong>&nbsp;(<em>dua \u2013&nbsp;<\/em>dva) je u izmumiranju, ali jo\u0161 se je na po\u010detku rije\u010di zadr\u017eala zamjena o glasom u te izjedna\u010davanje u nastavku mu\u0161kog i \u017eenskog roda imenica (<em>unda \u2013&nbsp;<\/em>onda<em>, z Anun \u2013<\/em>&nbsp;s Anom<em>, pod stolun \u2013&nbsp;<\/em>pod stolom<em>).&nbsp;<\/em>Jezi\u010dna ba\u0161tina je \u017eiva i svesrdno se njeguje u usmenom i pisanom obliku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"music\"><strong>MUSIC<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity contains two-part singing, which was first notated and systematised by the ethnomusicologist and composer Ivan Mateti\u0107 of Ronjgi, who studied the music of the people of the Kastav area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Istrian scale<\/strong>&nbsp;consists of six tones in specific relationships and provides the basic theoretical system for the folk music of Istria, the Croatian Littoral and the Kvarner islands. It was named after the Istrian peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The&nbsp;<\/strong><em><strong>sopile<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;is the best-known traditional instrument in the Kvarner area. It is a woodwind instrument similar to the oboe or shawm, an old European instrument with a double reed and conical bore. The&nbsp;<em>sopile<\/em>&nbsp;is always played in pairs, one player playing the&nbsp;<em>small sopila<\/em>&nbsp;and the other the&nbsp;<em>great sopila<\/em>. The instrument has six fingerholes and is made of maple wood.
