The Green Dry Stone Trail

Welcome to the Green Dry Stone Trail – a themed walking path that invites you to a unique blend of intangible assets from UNESCO’s Representative List. Ideal for nature, culture and outdoor enthusiasts, the trail leads through a typical karst landscape at the lowest point of Halubje (300 m above sea level), showcasing Viškovo’s natural beauty and rich heritage.

From the House of the Halubje Bell Ringers, the trail winds along centuries-old dry stone walls – quiet, steadfast witnesses to the life and work of our ancestors.  Dry stone walls bordered their plots of land to allow the meagre soil to yield the hardy vegetables at the heart of the Mediterranean hinterland’s traditional diet. We invite you to walk at an easy pace and take in the rustling of treetops and the whisper of stone. Enjoy the birdsong and the chance to encounter some forest animals!

The trail, which coincides in places with the bell ringers’ route, also gives you the opportunity to continue along the path towards Kapitovac Pond. Walking through a landscape filled with peace and history, you’ll be rewarded with an authentic experience of Halubje – an area where skills and knowledge live on in local cuisine, dry stone walls, local music and traditional customs. Respect nature and heritage – leave nothing but your footprints!
